A Whirlwind Year and Upcoming Events

It’s mid-November and we’re nearing the end of a very busy legal conference and law firm retreat season. I began regular air travel again starting in July and since then I’ve been to Philadelphia, Denver, Toledo, Rochester, Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, Richmond, Austin, Des Moines, Fort Lauderdale, Mazatlan, Vail, and Washington DC. In October alone, I stayed 23 nights in 10 different hotels! Before the year is over, I have 8 more cities to visit, 12 more flights, 1 train ride, and 23 more nights in a hotel. And, if the borders re-open, I may even make a quick holiday trip to Sydney, Australia to see my daughter for the first time in 617 days (and counting)!

I’ve also delivered 15 public presentations so far this year with 3 more to go, and several more already booked for 2022. I’ve also delivered numerous private keynotes and workshops at partner retreats. The hottest topics this year are law firm governance (how should we manage, who should manage), partner compensation (what should we reward more, or reward less), work allocation (how to give all associates a chance to succeed), path to partnership (what should we expect and how do we promote future owners), partner performance (what does it mean to be a law firm owner), and the post-pandemic law firm (how to leverage lessons learned to gain and maintain a competitive advantage). It would be great to have you join me at one of these upcoming events. For registration details, click on the event link or visit the events page here.

As we head into the holiday season, I hope your year has been as productive and as fruitful and as busy, or as mellow, as you hoped it would be! Thank you for your continued interest in my content.

Upcoming Events

18 November 2021 - Lessons from the Pandemic: What Managing Partners Need to Know about the Changing Legal Workspace. Sponsored by ContactEase CRM Made Easy. I will join David Ackert and Deborah Farone to discuss 2022 business planning, including: What are the elements of an effective plan, how to get buy-in, ensure accountability, and secure follow through.

26 January 2022 - Law Firm Compensation Think Tank. Hosted by The Ark Group. Building on the success of our original 2-day event, we’ve shortened the program to one day. The first half is a series of brief vignettes on critical issues related to partner compensation. The second half is a practical, interactive, and hands-on discussion of case studies reflecting actual partner compensation challenges. Like last time, I’ll work without a net. We’ll present a list of potential issues to tackle and the participants will decide which topics to discuss and in what depth. We had a great and engaged audience last time of managing partners, CFOs, COOs, executive committee members, and entire compensation committees, from at least 6 different time zones and 5 countries! All attendees receive a complimentary consultation afterward.
